It is still the gold standard for sauerbraten, and I've ordered it at Karl Raszch's (now closed) and Mader's in Milwaukee. I ordered the sauerbraten meal, which I hadn't had in years. My wife was especially looking forward to that, and you'd think it'd be a specialty given the place's name, but nope it had only a handful of halved cherries in it (not the cherry sauce filling you'd expect) and the cake layers had the taste and consistency of Hostess Devil Dogs. We also got a slice of Black Forest Cherry Tort to go. However, we both ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel which was bland, the veal had no flavor and wasn't breaded as I've had it in other places, and at $34.50 a plate absurdly overpriced. In terms of the food the dinner rolls and spatzel were good, as was the homemade cream soda my wife had. (all the best of articles from the mid-90's as you enter should have been a giveaway to that) and the atmosphere inside is charming with quirky posters and wall paintings, but it seemed half empty inside. I got the sense that this was a place that used to be outstanding. We had been craving a good German meal but this wasn't it. This ended up being both the most disappointing and most expensive meal we had on our trip to Minneapolis.
